Happy New Year from your Edinburgh wedding photographer and videographer! Well, I must say that 2010 has really flown by. Christmas 2009 seems not so long ago. I put this down to 2010 being my busiest year to date. We might have been in a recession, but it’s fair to say that when people are getting married they still want the best! 2010 saw a big increase in the number of last-minute and mid-week bookings for my Edinburgh wedding photographer services. The feedback has been that many couples weren’t sure of their budget, or a family member had offered to pay for wedding videography. So a few of my wedding videography bookings were at fairly short notice, say around 1-3 months instead of the typical 12-18 months. For 2011/2012, I’ve seen a shift back to couples booking quite far in advance, with many bookings for 2012 and 2013 already.
My wedding photography service has continued to flourish. I’ve had more Edinburgh wedding photographer bookings for 2010 than any previous year. I really enjoy being in a position to offer both wedding photography and wedding videography services. I absolutely love doing both and it really is a joy and a privilege to be providing these services.
2010 saw me join both the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP) and the Institute Of Videography (IOV). As a professional member of these two organisations, I am required to be fully insured and committed to the highest professional standards.
2010 also saw a change in the style of editing I employ. This has meant a slight increase in the time taken to complete orders, but the feedback I’ve had has been amazing.
What sets me apart from many an Edinburgh wedding photographer and videographer is my attention to detail. It would be really easy to get back from a photo shoot, copy the photos straight to DVD and pass these on to the newly-weds. Just by viewing many other wedding photographer’s websites it is clear that this practice is quite normal. I guess that many couples see their photos and are mesmerised by the fact that the photos are of their special day. Also, many people don’t really know what to expect or how to differentiate between an OK photo and a fantastic photo. Or they are so pleased to be receiving hundreds of photos that the sheer quantity is enough to satisfy. For a typical wedding photography package, I’ll provide over 400 top quality photos. I always review every photo and look at ways to improve the photo in post-production. It is rare that a photo cannot be improved with a little bit of cropping, colour adjustment, sharpening and so on.
Likewise, many of the wedding videography clips I view online (I like to keep an eye on what the competition are offering!) are often a small step above what Uncle Jimmy could produce with his small handheld camcorder. Automatic focusing, vomit inducing zooming in and out, no colour correction. Lack of colour correction is really noticeable when footage is shot under orange lighting. Nothing worse than ‘Ooompa-Loompa Orange Bride’!). Unfortunately, Poorly edited and shaky footage isn’t unusual.
For couple’s getting married in peak-season, April to December, I can take as much as 16 weeks to complete the video editing process. Photos are usually no more than 4 weeks. But it’s well worth the wait, especially for wedding photos and videos are the main records of your wedding day. I really do believe that top quality wedding photography and videography is an investment. Make a mistake booking someone who isn’t up to the job and you’ll always regret it. Get it right and you’ll have wedding photos and a video that you’ll want to view again and again for years to come.
I want to say a massive thank-you to everyone who commissioned my services during 2010. And thank you for your patience. Thank you so much to every one of you and for your input during the editing process. It’s fantastic to see couples who really know what they want. Your patience allows me to be creative. You guys are the best!
My biggest thanks for 2010 goes to my beautiful wife Claire, who has been so supportive and a fantastic Momma to our gorgeous little girl Anabelle Daisy. Claire is a fantastic wife, mother and friend and I am so lucky to have her as part of ‘Team Fowler’! 2011 will be another fantastic year as we look forward to the birth of another little girl in April.
2011 promises to be another extremely busy and exciting year for me!
